As the grand opening of Downtown Wellen inches closer, the picture of what this hub of freshness and fun will look like only becomes clearer. As construction teams are hard at work building out storefronts and interiors, we’ve been busy selecting artists to partake in the Downtown Wellen Mural Project, which will beautify several locations throughout the downtown area.
Like many other additions to Downtown Wellen, the muralists and their subject matter will closely reflect our location in sunny Southwest Florida. Each of the three murals “will capture the unique character of Wellen Park and downtown, and illustrate the community’s heartfelt connections” said Christine Massey, Wellen Park’s Vice President of Marketing. She continues to explain that an impressive passion for color and joy is what made each muralist’s submission stand out. Read on to learn more about each finalist!
“Any time you bring art into someone’s life, that’s what matters.” – Laura Pommier. Photo via @lauraannpommier
Laura Pommier resides in nearby Port Charlotte, but if you’re from Wellen Park, you’re likely already familiar with her art! Pommier is responsible for the vibrant “Blooms” mural, outside of our Welcome Center, and is so excited to be working on another project in the community.
“Someone who’s not even into art, who won’t walk into a gallery, can look at a mural and think about art in a space that’s not intimidating. It’s art for the people.” – Ivan Roque. Photo via @ivanjroque
Ivan Roque of Miami is a well-traveled artist who has crafted huge, photorealistic murals across an impressive 13 states and four countries. However, he says that this is his first mural on the west coast of his beloved home state, which checks off a line in his bucket list as a muralist.
“I always welcome people to stop by, watch and chat when I’m painting. Murals represent a community and add to its enjoyment.” – Christian Stanley. Photo via @cstanleycreative
Last but not least is Christian Stanley, who is based out of Central Florida. To Stanley, art is about community, and he’s proud to have several breathtaking murals across Orlando as well as his alma mater, the University of Central Florida.
We’re so happy to have had the opportunity to partner with the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County to introduce this larger-than-life project! These three artists are already hard at work crafting ideas and sketches, and we can’t wait for their masterpieces to become ingrained as a part of our community.
