If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, look no further than Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Complete with the scenic Myakka River and adjoining lakes, 39 miles of paved and unpaved hiking trails, and historic cabins, the park gives you a whole day’s worth (or weekend’s worth!) of adventure.
Located nine miles east of Sarasota on State Road 72, Myakka River State Park is just a quick 35-minute drive from Wellen Park and is an absolute must-visit.
There’s so much beauty to take in and many different areas of the park to explore — we’ve broken down a few of our favorites to help you plan your trip!
The Myakka River flows through 58-square-miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and pinelands — so, trust us when we say there’s plenty of waterside fun to be had.
The park is complete with a canoe launch, boat ramp, and fishing pier so you can spend a day along the river whichever way you’d like.
There’s also plenty of wildlife within the park, so keep an eye out for alligators, ducks, wading birds, wood storks, sandhill cranes, roseate spoonbills, eagles, ospreys, and shorebirds while you’re there.
Another very unique attraction of the park is its canopy walkway that takes you through the treetops.
The walkway was completed in 2000 and is the first public treetop trail in North America. It was built to allow visitors to see canopy inhabitants up close.
The walkway itself is 25 feet above the ground and extends 100 feet through the hammock canopy. There is an even taller tower that allows you to get a view of the treetops, wetlands, and prairie/hammock interface that soars 74 feet in the air.
Be sure to look for eagles, hawks, and vultures while you’re up there!
Take advantage of the park’s 39+ miles of paved and unpaved hiking trails by going on a nice long walk, run, or bike ride.
You can also explore the gorgeous wildflower fields, and admire the variety of land creatures too!
If you’d like to extend your visit to Myakka River State Park, take your pick from 80 shaded camping sites — all with water and electricity.
