Wellen Park to host third annual Half Marathon and 5K March 15

Wellen Park’s commitment to health and well-being “runs” deep as it prepares to host the third annual Half Marathon and 5K race, presented by Hotwire Communications, Saturday, March 15, 2025. The 13.1-mile course is certified by USA Track & Field.

Both races also include opportunities for participants taking a slower pace – walkers, those with strollers or leashed dogs. Starting from Solis Hall in downtown, the half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m. with men’s and women’s overall record times of 1:16:12.7 and 1:25:56 set during the inaugural event in 2023. The 5K begins at 7:45 a.m.

“Health and wellness are core values for Wellen Park and a commitment we take seriously,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “We designed the community to offer alternatives to the indoor environment of a typical gym with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation and programming that takes advantage of our trails, downtown’s Great Lawn and the Grand Lake. At Wellen Park, we work hard to offer a vibrant, multi-faceted approach to wellness.”

Benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, half marathon entry fees are $55 for ages 13 to 18 and $75 for those over 18. The 5K is $22.50 for entrants 18 and younger and $35 for those over 18. The morning also includes post-race food and beverages and award ceremonies for the top finishers.             Exercise and fitness at Wellen Park are often accompanied by breathtaking views and programs so fun participants barely notice they’ve broken a sweat. Wellen Park’s 30 miles of trails provide a scenic setting for the friendly group meet-ups, as well as solo sojourns for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists. Connecting to parks and Downtown Wellen, the trails include the picturesque three-mile path around the 80-acre Grand Lake, a popular destination for kayakers, paddleboarders and anglers eager to catch an iconic largemouth bass and threadfin shad. Kind Vibes Outfitters offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, bait and fishing gear. Paddlers burn calories while gliding along the serene lake and immersing themselves in the beauty of Florida’s native wildlife and early-evening sunsets.

Through its partnership with the Venice YMCA, Wellen Park also offers complimentary morning fitness classes three times a week on the Great Lawn. Participants enjoy yoga, Zumba and mind and body workouts.

“We offer a variety of programs, events and amenities to foster health and wellness,” said Severance. “It’s as simple as venturing outside for a walk with friends or showing up for an exercise class. We want to make it simple for the community to enjoy the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.”
